The Spanish expedition led by de Soto entered the Mississippi valley immediately south of Memphis on May 8, 1541. The Spanish explorers traveled 500 miles in their search for wealth from May 8 to Sept. 10, 1541.

Dye has published several articles on the de Soto expedition and has delivered numerous papers on the topic. He was one of four U.S. scholars invited to participate in an international congress in Spain last June on the subject of de Soto.

Sunday's event is sponsored by Southeast's sociology and anthropology departments and the University Museum. There is no admission charge.
