Dr. Alonzo Hamby, distinguished professor of history at Ohio University, will speak at the annual Copper Dome Society dinner.
The dinner is scheduled for May 8 at the Show Me Center.
The event, which recognizes Southeast Missouri University Foundation members, will begin with a social at 6:30 p.m., followed by dinner at 7 p.m.
Hamby will discuss "who was Harry Truman and why should we care?"
Dr. Alberta Dougan, who heads Southeast Missouri State University's history department, said Hamby is one of the top five Truman scholars in the nation.
Hamby received his bachelor of arts degree from Southeast in 1960 and his doctorate from the University of Missouri in 1965.
He has been a professor at Ohio University since then. In addition, Hamby served as director of graduate studies in the history department from 1978 to 1980, and again from 1987 to 1988. He chaired the history department from 1980 to 1983.
In 1985, Hamby was named Southeast's Outstanding History Alumnus. In 1990, he received Southeast's College of Liberal Arts Alumni Merit Award.
He is the author of four books, including "Beyond the New Deal: Harry S. Truman and American Liberalism."
