The Cape Girardeau Police Department is warning residents of a possible phone scam.

According to an email from public information officer Darin Hickey, someone identifying himself as a Medicare representative is calling their Social Security numbers and bank accounts to verify account information.

Police have received reports that if the caller is questioned about the nature of the call, he will hang up, Hickey said.

"The police department wants to remind everyone to be diligent and cautious when giving personal information over the phone," Hickey wrote in his email. "Make sure you know who you are talking to, and make every attempt to verify that information."
