ST. LOUIS (AP) -- A St. Louis police officer is on leave after officers say he fatally shot a would-be robber inside a Denny's restaurant.

Lt. Ken Bradshaw said the man walked into the restaurant at 1:20 a.m. Friday and pointed a gun at the officer, who was seated at a counter. Bradshaw said several shots were fired, all by the officer.

The gunman was taken to a hospital with bullet wounds described as "very serious" and later died.

The officer was not hurt nor were any of the several employees in the restaurant at the time. No customers were there when it happened.
