JACKSON, Mo. -- A man was arrested Saturday for making a false report after apparently lying about an armed robbery, police said.

A caller had reported that a man wearing a ski mask and holding a small black handgun had robbed Casey's General Store at 920 W. Independence St. about 3 p.m., police detective James Humphreys said.

He claimed to police the robber took cash from the clerk and fled from the store on foot.

"We've learned since then that this is not true," Humphreys said.

Police would not identify the man in custody, but said he was facing charges of stealing along with making a false report.
