ST. LOUIS (AP) -- A man is in custody after a bank robbery in St. Louis County. Now, authorities want to know if he is the so-called "Boonie Hat Bandit."
The robbery occurred Thursday at a Commerce Bank branch. Responding officers spotted the suspect's car shortly after the robbery and stopped it near Interstate 270. Bank officials identified the car's driver as the robber, and police say money taken from the bank was recovered.
Police have been searching for weeks for a man believed responsible for at least 11 St. Louis area bank robberies. The man earned the nickname the "Boonie Hat Bandit" because he twice wore a military style "Boonie" hat during robberies. He is white and was well dressed during the crimes.
The suspect arrested Thursday was white and wore a sports jacket.
