Police are searching for a suspect in connection with an armed robbery Saturday afternoon in downtown Cape Girardeau.
Cape Girardeau Police Sgt. Rick Schmidt said police responded to a reported robbery near the intersection of Independence and Main streets.
Upon arrival, police pursued two black men seen running west on Broadway from Main Street, but lost sight of them.
"One of the suspects was found hiding under the back porch," Schmidt said, indicating a building north of Broadway and Spanish Street. "He was taken into custody without incident. The other suspect fled the scene on foot."
The suspect is described as being a black man with shoulder-length dreadlocks, a white T-shirt and beige camouflage shorts and armed with a handgun.
"He was last seen going in a northwesterly direction," Schmidt said.
The victim, a Cape Girardeau man who said he knew the men who robbed him, reported lightheadedness and dizziness following the robbery. After being examined by medical personnel, he did not go to the hospital. He went with police to the police station to aid investigators.
The victim said the men "flourished a gun, took his wallet," Schmidt said. Police are trying to determine whether a cellphone was taken from the victim.
Schmidt said the suspects likely will face charges of first-degree robbery and armed criminal action.
