Police: Kirkwood shooter used stolen gun

KIRKWOOD, Mo. (AP) -- The man who killed five people at Kirkwood City Hall used a stolen gun.

Police have no idea where Charles Lee "Cookie" Thornton got the weapon. Thornton killed two police officers, two members of the city council and the public works director in a rampage at a council meeting earlier this month.

Thornton began the assault by killing police Sgt. William Biggs outside of City Hall, then took the officer's semiautomatic pistol and the stolen gun into the council chambers. Police say he used both weapons before he was shot to death by police.

Officials say the large-caliber revolver was stolen in Franklin County in 1994 or 1995.
