Police spokesman Darin Hickey said the pursuit began after police received a tip from a caller that a possible felon was in possession of a firearm and standing near the intersection. Hickey said officers went to the area and located a man, who they told to raise his hands as they exited their patrol cars. When he raised his hands, a black handgun was visible in his waistband, Hickey said. The man then turned and ran from officers, who pursued him between houses in the neighborhood. The man allegedly fired a shot toward officers, at which time the officers backed off some from the chase and lost sight of the man as he ran east from the area among more houses.

Police identified Rutherford as the suspect early Tuesday and arrested him before noon. He is charged with one felony count of unlawful possession of a firearm, two felony counts of unlawful use of a weapon and one felony count of resisting arrest. He was taken to the Cape Girardeau County Jail and remained in custody Tuesday on a $25,000 bond.
