A Cape Girardeau man with a history of drug convictions fought with police trying to search his apartment, according to charges filed today in Cape Girardeau County Circuit Court.

Bryan D. McDowell, 28, 618 North St., No. 302, was charged with possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute, assault on a law enforcement officer and resisting arrest by using force. All three charges are felonies, and Cape Girardeau County Prosecuting Attorney Morley Swingle charged McDowell as a prior and persistent offender because of methamphetamine and marijuana convictions in 2001 and 2003.

The Cape Girardeau Police Department and the Southeast Missouri Drug Task Force arrived at McDowell's residence about 8:30 p.m. Thursday as part of an ongoing narcotics investigation, investigator Daniel Seger wrote in a sworn statement filed with the complaint. At the home they found two women, two men and at least one small child, Seger wrote.

The women and one of the men complied with police orders to lie on the floor, but Seger wrote that McDowell struck back when Cpl. Jeffrey Bonham tried to place his hands on him. McDowell pushed Bonham, who fell backward over one of the other people and struck his head on a glass coffee table, according to Seger. The legs broke off the table, and it fell on Bonham and a 1-year-old child, cutting Bonham's hand and scraping his helmet.

Other officers struggled with McDowell, and he was handcuffed after injuring the hand of officer Mike Kidd.

Seger searched McDowell, finding a plastic bag of what later proved to be methamphetamine. In the living room of the home, officers found residue of meth use and 20 pseudoephedrine pills.

When McDowell was taken to police headquarters, a second plastic bag containing meth was found, Seger wrote. Under questioning, McDowell told Seger that he would trade the pseudoephedrine for meth.

Associate Circuit Judge Gary Kamp set bond for McDowell at $150,000. No one else present at the apartment was charged, Swingle said Friday afternoon.
