Plans to produce a flag for Cape Girardeau were finalized Monday at a meeting between committees from the Class of 2000 and Vision 2000.
Both a children's flag and a city flag will be designed in a contest to begin soon. Guidelines will be available once the contest is officially announced at a press conference scheduled for mid-January at City Hall.
The deadline for submitting entries will be Feb. 27.
Children through age 12 will be eligible to design the children's flag. A proposal was discussed to offer children art instruction that would help in drawing a flag.
A panel of judges will winnow the entries in both contests to a manageable number before the population at large votes to determine the winners.
The new city flag is scheduled to be unveiled at a Cape Girardeau Municipal Band concert June 10, the Wednesday before Flag Day.
The committees plan for the children's flag to fly at the elementary schools, the Cape Girardeau Public Library and perhaps local hospitals.
