Pictures of the Past #85: Veterans Day

A military service board was erected on lower Broadway in October 1918. It contained the names of all Cape Girardeau residents who served in the armed forces during World War I. After the war, the board fell into disrepair and was finally taken down in 1921. (Missourian archive)

Published March 5, 1956 Members of the Cape Girardeau Camp No. 34 of Spanish War Veterans held their last meeting March 5, 1956, because time had dwindled their ranks. The camp had only 13 members, living all over Southeast Missouri, but only these seven were able to attend the final session, it being decided to disband in view of the reduced number and their ages. Standing, from the left, were P.N. Keller, 79, Chaffee; Camp Commander C.M. Barnes of Marston, 82, and C.T. Berry, 80, of Cape Girardeau. Seated, from the left, were C.U. Three hundred thirty-five students at the State Teachers College in Cape Girardeau participated in the Navy V-12 program as apprentice seamen. This photo was taken on the steps of Academic Hall in December 1943.

Veterans Day was observed in Cape Girardeau on Nov. 11, 1960, with a parade. This view, showing Combat Support Company of the Missouri National Guard, was on Pacific street as the parade got under way. Brick pillars at the southeast corner of Capaha Park held service boards during World War II. The boards listed the names of all the men and women serving in the armed forces.
