When I saw that a storm was approaching Jackson from the west, I drove to Cape County Park North to watch from a parking lot at the north edge of the park. Lightning eventually lit up the sky over the Cape Girardeau SportsPlex. The summer breeze grew cooler as I sat on a boulder with camera on tripod on August 3, 2017.

It Out event put on by Authentic Voices and Dem Boyz at Indian Park 
Saturday, August 26, 2017 in Cape Girardeau. "Make change happen in the 
community." Koreena Woodson, co-chair, of Authentic Voices had said 
describing what she wants to do for the south side. Over 200 people came
 out to Indian Park throughout the day from 1 p.m. until 7 p.m. with a 
kid dance contest at 4:30 p.m. Free food and face painting was available
 for anyone to attend and even the Cape Girardeau Fire Department came 
out and allowed kids to sit and look inside of a fire truck. Woodson 
said the point of the event was to bring the community together dance 
and have fun.

Soon after totality began, "The cicadas got loud, and we heard owls hooting," Carol Roth said. She added that the rock monument seemed the same, except for the plaque on it. "That needs to be re-done."
