Procter & Gamble Co. has awarded nine of its 128 P&G Fund Scholarship Program scholarships to children of Cape Girardeau P&G employees.
The fund provides recipients with a renewable four-year award between $1,000 and $4,000 for an accredited college or university. Winners are selected based on academic achievement, leadership skills, accomplishments outside the classroom and recommendations.
The nine scholarships went to:
-- Glen E. Brunke, a 1997 graduate of Jackson High School, the son of Ed and Diana Brunke of Jackson.
Brunke was involved in Hi-Step, JOCKS, chamber choir and Just Say No. He was a junior Rotarian, a member a choir council, the captain of the football team, and the editor of the high school newspaper, the Squawler. In football, he received all conference, all district and the Carr Trophy. He plans to attend the University of Missouri-Columbia.
-- Kyle B. Daugherty, a 1997 graduate of Jackson High School, the son of Dan and Susan Daugherty of Jackson.
Daugherty was involved in drama club, speech team, Chemistry Bowl, Quill and Scroll and the Scholar Bowl team on which he made all district for two years. He has received a Bright Flight Scholarship, an Honors Academy Scholarship and a C. James Grimm Scholarship from the University of Missouri-Rolla, where he will major in electrical and computer engineering.
-- Derek N. Fenwick, a 1997 graduate of Notre Dame High School, the son of Steve and Nancy Fenwick of Cape Girardeau.
Fenwick was involved in National Honor Society, of which he was president, Future Business Leaders of America, Projects Club, Students Against Driving Drunk, Intramural Club, school musical crew and School Peer Helpers group. In student council he was the sophomore and junior class president, senior student council president, and received the U.S. Student Council Award. He was named Exchange Club Student of the Month and received the U.S. Leadership Award. In varsity soccer, he was captain and first team all conference and all district. He played varsity and junior varsity baseball and was the manager and assistant coach of the girls varsity soccer team. Fenwick plans to attend St. Louis University and major in physical therapy.
-- Ryan B. Kasten, a 1997 graduate of Jackson High School, the son of Brad and Vickie Kasten of Jackson.
Kasten was involved in Future Business Leaders of America, National Honor Society and French Club, and was the president of speech team and Peer Tutors and the sophomore class president in student council.
His honors include Elks' Student of the Month, 1994 Missouri Scholars Academy and Tufts Summit Program in Talloires, France. He was the winner of the 1993 Southeast Missouri State University Writing Contest and Optimist Oratorical Contest. He plans to attend Brown University in Providence, R.I., and major in biology and pre-medicine.
-- Alisha A. Liley, a 1997 graduate of Jackson High School, the daughter of Mike and Carol Keen and Mike and Laura Liley of Jackson.
Liley was student council secretary and sophomore class president, Future Business Leaders of America historian, Hi-Step leader, National Honor Society historian, junior Rotarian, yearbook sports editor and 1995 and 1996 winter homecoming queen. She was involved in Senior Steering Committee, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, J-Club, French club and Just Say No. She was co-captain of varsity softball, played varsity basketball and ran varsity track. Liley has received the Missouri Leadership Scholarship, President's Scholarship, Southeast Missouri State University softball scholarship, Daughters of the American Revolution Award and Elks' Student of the Month. She plans to attend Southeast Missouri State University and major in secondary education and coaching.
-- Shannon L. Perry, a 1997 graduate of Jackson High School, the daughter of James and Susan Perry of Jackson.
Perry was involved in Just Say No, J-Club, Peer Tutor club, Pep Club, National Honor Society and Senior Steering Committee. She was student council president, a representative on the Southeast Missouri Hospital Main Street Fitness advisory board and a junior Rotarian. Her honors include a National Merit finalist, Elks' Student of the Month, senior scholar athlete, Who's Who Among Aerican High School Students and Tandy Technology Scholars outstanding student. Perry was captain of varsity soccer and basketball and received all state and academic all state in basketball. Perry plans to attend the University of Missouri-Rolla and major in aerospace engineering.
-- Mark J. Scarborough, a 1997 graduate of Central High School, the son of Jeff and Debbie Scarborough of Cape Girardeau.
Scarborough was involved in Latin club, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Beta club, National Honor Society, junior varsity cross country and Future Business Leaders of America. His honors include Who's Who Among American High School Students, Daughters of the American Revolution History Award and National Merit-commended scholar. Scarborough plans to attend Southeast Missouri State University and major in nursing.
-- Amy B. Strickland, a 1997 graduate of Oak Ridge High School, the daughter of Paul Strickland of Jackson and Sally Strickland of Oak Ridge.
Strickland was involved in art, Spanish, science and pep clubs, Future Homemakers of America, Students Against Driving Drunk, Excels, National Honor Society, Girl Scouts, UMYF, Science Olypiad team and cheerleading. She was valedictorian, drum majorette and twirler. Her honors include Silver Award, Who's Who Among American High School Students and National Math Award. Strickland plans to study sociology and philosophy at Drury College in Springfield, Mo., where she received the Scholar's Award, the Dean's Scholarship, Bright Flight and Leadership Award.
-- Darla L. Upchurch, a 1997 graduate of Jackson High School, the daughter of Edgar and Linda Upchurch of Jackson.
Upchurch was involved in Quill and Scroll, Drama club, Spanish club, Hi-Step, Jackson Acting Motivators, Future Business Leaders of America, band, National Honor Society and speech team. Upchurch plans to attend Southwest Missouri State University where she received Bright Flight and the Board of Governor's Scholarship.
