PERRYVILLE, Mo. -- The Perryville Board of Aldermen on Tuesday night approved the 2014 budget for the Perry County Economic Development Authority.

Under the $153,075 budget, contributions from the authority's two primary funding sources -- the city of Perryville and Perry County -- will remain the same as last year, with each entity pitching in $71,460 toward the operating budget, according to a letter executive director Scott Sattler sent the board.

The balance of the authority's budget will come from fundraising activities and interest income, Sattler said in his letter.

  • Agreed to keep the city's garbage and solid waste collection fees at their current levels for the next three years.
  • Discussed the possibility of enacting zoning rules to permit microbreweries and distilleries to operate in areas where bars are allowed. City attorney Thomas Ludwig recommended the ordinance include quantity restrictions so a microbrewery doesn't grow into a wholesale operation in the middle of a district zoned for bars and restaurants.
  • Turned down an offer from a Washington, D.C.-based organization that would have provided seed money for residents to obtain outdoor kennels and doghouses on the condition that the city outlaw tethering animals outdoors. Several aldermen raised concerns that such a policy could create hardships for some residents.
  • Heard a report on the city's wastewater treatment system. City administrator Brent Buerck said the system has problems with its sand filter, but questions exist about how long the aging technology will be able to keep up with increasingly strict water-quality standards, even if the filter is repaired or replaced.
