Perry County School District bus driver Sandy Sauer saved the life of 9-year-old Cameron Weekly who was choking on a piece of candy Monday morning, according to a release from the district on Friday.
When he realized he still had the candy in his mouth, he went to the front of the bus to spit it in the trashcan, Weeklys mother, Kimberly, said in the release. He took a breath, and the candy lodged in his airway.
According to the release, when Sauer realized Cameron Weekly was in distress, she patted his back and asked if he could breathe.
When Cameron indicated he could not breathe, Sauer administered the Heimlich maneuver, the release stated, dislodging the candy.
Sauer then notified the school and continued her route.
He was shaken up, but he was fine, Weekly said in the release. He told me that he guesses this is why Miss Sandy doesnt allow candy on the bus.
In the release, Sauer said, Ive never had anything like this happen on my bus before.
District superintendent Andy Comstock said in the release, Were all proud of Sandy and her heroic efforts to protect a student in her care.
Our drivers are highly trained not just in transporting students, but in things like first aid and CPR, he said. They prepare for the worst, and hope for the best.
