Peoria sheriff, school official hit while jogging

PEORIA, Ill. -- The sheriff of Peoria County and a central Illinois school superintendent remained hospitalized Monday after being hit by a car while jogging together over the weekend, officials said.

Sheriff Mike McCoy and Elmwood superintendent Tom Kahn were both in fair condition at Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria, hospital officials said.

Family and co-workers say McCoy, 56, suffered a pelvic injury while the 58-year-old Kahn suffered a concussion and a cut on his head.

Peoria police say McCoy and Kahn were hit from behind by a pickup truck while jogging about 7 a.m. Sunday near Peoria's Northwoods Mall.

Police have not identified the 62-year-old driver, but say he was not injured and that there are no signs alcohol or drugs were involved. No charges have been filed, but police say they are still investigating the accident.

Friends say McCoy and Kahn are avid joggers who often run together.

McCoy, sheriff since 2002, co-founded a Memphis-to-Peoria run to raise money for St. Jude Children's Hospital. Kahn, Elmwood's superintendent for more than a decade, has participated in the run, friends say.

Police say both men were wearing reflective vests to make themselves more visible to motorists.
