Central graduate accepted to Mizzou

Whitney Pingel, a 2003 graduate of Central High School, has been accepted to the University of Missouri-Columbia, where she plans to pursue a degree in elementary education.

She has been awarded the university's curator's scholarship, a Missouri Bright Flight and the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education teacher scholarship.

Pingel is the daughter of Dale and Rene' Pingel.

Oran student chosen to attend Boys State

Brent Graviett, a student at Oran High School, has been selected to attend the upcoming American Legion Boys State of Missouri at Central Missouri State University in Warrensburg, Mo.

He is sponsored by the Oran Jaycees and is the son of Robert and Carla Graviett.

Local student receives academic honors

Heather Hey recently received academic honors at Indiana Institute of Technology.

She is the son of Everett and Nancy Hey of Cape Girardeau.

Knoth gets scholarship to Truman State

Craig Arthur Knoth has received a Truman State University Foundation scholarship for the 2003-04 school year.

He is a senior business administration major and is the son of Donald and Marth Knoth of Cape Girardeau.

He is a Central High School graduate and received the Maurice E. Wade scholarship and R. Bruce Craddock memorial scholarship.

Steele earns doctorate from optometry college

Michael P. Steele of Cape Girardeau recently graduated from the Illinois College of Optometry with a doctorate in optometry.

He is a 1994 graduate of Central High School and a 1998 graduate of the University of Missouri-Columbia.

He will continue his training during a residency at Ochsner Hospital and Clinic in New Orleans. Steele is the son of Richard and Gayle Steele of Cape Girardeau.

Barrett chosen Murray State student ambassador

Bryanna Barrett, daughter of Brian and Jo Ann Barrett of Marble Hill, Mo., was chosen as a student ambassador at Murray State University and as an agricultural ambassdor for the university's School of Agriculture for the 2003-04 school year.

She was named to the spring 2003 dean's list and was also selected for the National Dean's List for the 2002-03 school year. She is a 2002 graduate of Notre Dame Regional High School.

Area student earns degree from Northwest State

Stephanie Jordan of Cape Girardeau recently graduated from the Missouri Academy of Science, Mathematics and Computing at Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville, Mo., with an associate's degree.

She will attend Hillsdale College in Hillsdale, Mich., and plans to major in economics and history. She was awarded the trustee and Tinsley Independence scholarship at Hillsdale.

Jordan is the daughter of David and Joanne Jordan of Cape Girardeau.

Ortiz graduates with honors from Aurora

Sandra Birkman Ortiz, a 1968 graduate of Central High School, graduated summa cum laude from Aurora University in Aurora, Ill., June 1 with a bachelor's degree in organization management.

Ortiz graduated with a 4.0 grade point average and is the daughter of Louis Birkman of Cape Girardeau.

Hanschen graduates from University of Arkansas

Leslie Hanschen of Jackson recently graduated from the University of Arkansas-Fayetteville with a bachelor's degree in French at J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences.

Cheung gets scholarship from Eyecare Center

Patricia Cheung, a 2003 graduate of Central High School, recently received a scholarship from Regional Eyecare Center Inc. in Cape Girardeau.

Cheung plans to pursue a four-year degree in a health-related field.

Stroder accepted into honors organization

Ryan Stroder of Jackson has been accepted into the Golden Key International Honour Society and was recently honored at a campus ceremony at the University of Missouri-Columbia.

Golden Key is a non-profit academic honors organization that provides leadership opportunities, community service and scholarships. Stroder is a 2001 graduate of Jackson High School and is in his junior year at Mizzou.

Walker gets law degree from Mississippi college

Melissa Bednarek Walker recently received a doctor of jurisprudence degree from Mississippi College School of Law in Jackson, Miss. She is the daughter of Delores Bednarek and the late Joseph Bednarek of Cape Girardeau.

Terra Herzberger, Kelli Canfield and Justin Welker, all of Cape Girardeau, were named to the dean's list at Central Missouri State University for the spring 2003 semester. Herzberger had a perfect 4.0 grade point average.

Oak Ridge valedictorian, salutatorian chosen

Laura Ellen Glueck was chosen as valedictorian and Charles Thomas Phillips was chosen as salutatorian for the 2003 graduating class of Oak Ridge High School.

Both plan to attend the University of Missouri-Columbia in the fall; Glueck to study biology and medicine and Phillips to study political science and criminal justice.

Glueck received a columns scholarship from Mizzou, the A-plus designation scholarship and scholarships from the Cape Girardeau County Rotary Club and Oak Ridge Booster Club. She is the daughter of Charles and Donna Glueck.

Phillips received a curators scholarship from Mizzou and is the son of Don and Joan Phillips.
