Spinks honored as Tech-Prep Student of the Year
Philip Spinks, a senior at Scott City High School, and student at the Cape Girardeau Career and Technology Center, was named Tech-Prep Student of the Year by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.
Thirteen other students from around the state were chosen as finalists.
Spinks is enrolled in the electronics technology program at the CTC and has earned 15 college credits and a scholarship from Mineral Area College. He is pursuing a career as a biomedical equipment technician.
Southeast professor named ACE Fellow
Dr. Nancy Blattner, academic associate in the office of the provost and associate dean in the School of University Studies at Southeast Missouri State University, has been named an American Council on Education Fellow for the 2002-2003 academic year.
In addition to her administrative duties, Blattner also is an English professor at Southeast.
The ACE Fellows program, established in 1965, is designed to strengthen institutions and leadership in American higher education by identifying and preparing promising faculty and senior administrators for positions in college and university administration.
Thirty-seven Fellows, nominated by the presidents or chancellors of their institutions, were selected this year in a nationwide competition.
The Fellows Program has had nearly 1,350 participants in its 37-year history. More than 250 have become chief executive officers and nearly 1,000 have become provosts, vice presidents or deans.
Trinity kindergarten enrollment under way
Trinity Lutheran School at 55 N. Pacific in Cape Girardeau currently is enrolling pre-kindergarten and kindergarten students for the 2002-2003 school year.
To be eligible for pre-school, children must be 4 years of age by Aug. 1. For kindergarten, children must be 5 years of age by Aug. 1.

Public library to hold Renaissance festival
The Cape Girardeau Public Library will hold a Renaissance festival on April 20 to celebrate National Library Week and the conclusion of the winter reading programs.
The festival is scheduled to start at 1 p.m. at 711 N. Clark. It will feature storytellers and craft demonstrations. There will be games for children and a costume contest. Prizes will be awarded for the most authentic and creative costumes.

Essner chosen as student of the month
Dana Essner, daughter of Steve and Donna Essner of Scott City, was named Elks student of the month for April.
Essner is involved in many extra curricular activities at Scott City High School, including cheerleading, National Honor Society, Future Business Leaders of America, Future Teachers of America, Future Commerce Community Leaders of America, pep club and track and field.
Winners announced for art competition
U. S. Representative Jo Ann Emerson announced Friday the winners of the 2002 Eighth Congressional District Art Competition.
Winners from Central High School were first runner-up Rachel Silvers, for "Time Lies Within," and honorable mention Anne Voepel, Central High School, for "NYC."
The competition is held in conjunction with the Annual Congressional Art Competition for high school students nationwide. The grand prizewinning piece from each congressional district is displayed as part of the national exhibition in the U. S. Capitol through May of 2003.
West named to 2002 high school Who's Who
Cherish Elizabeth West, a senior at Central High School, received recognition in the Who's Who Among American High School Students 2000-01 edition.
West is involved in the Central Marching Band, Salsa Band, Roc Ensemble, Spanish Club and Future Business Leaders of America.
She is the daughter of James and Madonna S. West of Cape Girardeau.
Meadow Heights places in Physics Olympics
Meadow Heights High School students Tessa Bollinger, Zachary Breitenstein, Erin Miinch, Kevin Shoemake, Bart Wolczyk represented the school at the 2002 Physics Olympics at Southeast Missouri State University March 18.
This was the first time for Meadow Heights to enter the competition. The school placed second in the laser shoot event and fifth overall.
Oran announces dates of kindergarten screening
Oran Elementary School kindergarten enrollment for the 2002-03 school year will be April 10 and 11 from 8:45 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
Parents must first contact the school office at 262-3435 to make an appointment.
To enroll in the 2002-03 school year the child must be at least 5-years-old by Aug. 1.
Parents are reminded children entering kindergarten need to have their last set of shots before school begins. Parents should bring the child's updated shot record book along with a copy of the birth certificate and Social Security card to enrollment.
The Parents as Teachers preschool screening will also be held April 11 for 3- and 4-year-olds. Call the school to make an appointment.
Statler earns Southeast GED scholarship
Joshua P. Statler of Jackson, Mo., has been awarded a General Education Degree Scholarship to attend Southeast Missouri State University for the 2002-03 academic year.
The award is given to students at Southeast who have completed their GED program and achieved a combined standard score of 300 or above.
Statler is the son of Ivan and Susan Statler of Jackson. He plans to major in computer science at Southeast.
Shumaker receives scholarship to Southeast
Jessica E. Shumaker of Olive Branch, Ill., has been awarded a community college scholarship to attend Southeast Missouri State University.
The community college scholarship is a renewable award of $2,500 for two semesters. The scholarship is awarded to students transferring from a community college to the university and who meet other criteria as outlined by the university.
Shumaker is a 2000 graduate of Egyptian High School and will be a 2002 graduate of Shawnee Community College. She is the daughter of Dale and Linda Shumaker of Olive Branch. She plans to major in business at Southeast.
Brookover receives Regents' Scholarship
Amy E. Brookover has been awarded a Regents' Scholarship to attend Southeast Missouri State University for the 2002-03 academic year.
Brookover is the daughter of Gary and Sherry Brookover of Cape Girardeau. She will be a 2002 graduate of Central High School.
