The Cooperative Work Experience Program has a new program that focuses on identifying the student's vocational interests, work skills and abilities with the purpose of identifying vocational goals and appropriate post-school outcomes. 4-H member gets Crawford Scholarship

Missouri 4-H member Jessica Morrow of Jackson, Mo., received the Aleta Crawford 4-H Scholarship.

Morrow, 19, will use the $500 at an accredited four-year institution of her choice. She is the daughter of William and Carol Morrow.

Aleta Crawford Massey, an Arkansas native, was a home economist. She was involved with the American International Association in Brazil, Centenary United Methodist Church, the Cape Girardeau County Professional Economist Association and the League of Women Voters. She died in 1996.

Extension Council scholarship available

Graduates of Cape Girardeau County high schools or county residents that graduated from an adjoining school district who have completed 60 hours toward an undergraduate degree and have a grade-point average of at least 2.5 can apply for the University of Missouri Extension Council Scholarship.

Applicants must be enrolled in a four-year degree program in either agriculture, human environmental services, youth development or business.

A cash award of $200 will be paid directly to the institution of the recipient's choice.

Applications are due to the Extension Office, 648 W. Jackson Trail, in Jackson by July 22. The recipient will be notified by July 29.

Library kicks off its summer reading program

"Mysterious Summer," the Cape Girardeau Public Library's 2002 summer reading program, runs June 1 through Aug. 2.

Children from birth to grade five may sign up to read or listen for a minimum of 900 minutes with opportunities to collect prizes and puzzle pieces along the way.

Participants who complete the game board will receive a certificate of accomplishment, a free paperback book and an entry form for the grand prize bicycle drawing.

Sign-ups cannot be taken over the phone.

Cape resident receives master's degree

Tara Miller of Cape Girardeau received a master's degree in rehabilitation administration from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale in May.

Miller is a 1989 graduate of Notre Dame Regional High School. She received her bachelor's degree in exercise physiology at SIU.

She is the daughter of Mitch and Diane Miller of Cape Girardeau.

Students honored with 'I Dare You' award

Andrew Norton and Lauren Parrant, students at Central Junior High School, have been awarded the national I Dare You Leadership Award in recognition of personal integrity, balanced living and potential for leadership.

Norton and Parrant received a recognition certificate and scholarship opportunity to attend the American Youth Foundation's International Leadership Conferences in Michigan and New Hampshire.

Cape work program has new offering

The Division of Vocational Rehabilitation has partnered with the Cape Girardeau Public Schools Cooperative Work-Experience Program (COOP) to offer a new program for eligible students.

The program, called Comprehensive Transition Assessment, focuses on identifying the student's vocational interests, work skills and abilities with the purpose of identifying vocational goals and appropriate post-school outcomes.

The major emphasis is to identify specific strategies that will increase the student's opportunity for success in a post-secondary educational training or work environment.

P&G awards scholarship to Central student

Procter & Gamble recently awarded Eric C. Daume, a student at Central High School, a college scholarship for $2,500 for full-time study at an accredited college or university.

Southeast Missouri natives earn degrees

Kurre T. Luber graduated with a doctor of medical degree from the University of Missouri on May 18.

While attending school, he won the department of orthopedic surgery's orthopedic award. He previously received a bachelor's degree in biology from the University of Mississippi. He has accepted an orthopedic residency at University Hospital in Jackson, Mo., where he lives with his wife, the former Tara Atchison, and his son.

Byron Allen Luber recently received his MBA degree from Washington University in St. Louis. He previously received a master's in accounting from the University of Missouri and his bachelor's degree in accounting from the University of Mississippi.

He lives with his wife, the former Peggy Wieble, and his son in Ladue, Mo.

The Lubers are the grandsons of the late Thomas Kurre and Olga Mae Allen of Jackson, Mo., and the late Lawrence and Beulah Luber of Sikeston, Mo.

Cape Girardeau resident receives dental degree

Donna A. Vied, of Cape Girardeau, was awarded a doctorate of dental medicine from the University of Kentucky College of Dentistry May 5.

Vied is planning to obtain an oral and maxillofacial surgery residency.
