Two selected to contend in Heisman program

Tessa Bollinger and Matt Angle were selected by Meadow Heights High School to contend in the eighth annual Wendy's High School Heisman Program based on their performances academically and participation in extracurricular activities.

The program was created through a partnership between Wendy's International, the National Association of Secondary School Principals and the Downtown Athletic Club, home of the Heisman Memorial Trophy since 1935.

The Wendy's High School Heisman Program recognizes high school seniors nationwide who have learned to collaborate and appreciate the interrelation of academics, athletics and community service.

Five students get Knights scholarship

The Jackson Knights of Columbus recently presented $500 college scholarships to five area high school seniors.

Scholarship recipients were Amanda Gosche of Notre Dame High School, Julie Myers of Oak Ridge High School, Justin Baltzell of Jackson High School, Heather Fitzgerald of Notre Dame High School and Core Bohnert of Jackson High School.

Oak Ridge district to get energy loan

The Oak Ridge school district will receive a $95,755 energy loan from the Missouri Department of Natural Resources to finance energy-efficiency improvements at the school district.

The improvements are expected to reduce the annual utility bill by $14,444.

The improvements include lighting upgrades, window replacement, boiler replacement and installation of programmable thermostats.

Missouri school districts and local governments saved an estimated $264,200 in energy costs as a result of last year's loans.

Cape Central band to perform in Carbondale

The Cape Central Marching Band will be on the road this weekend for a performance Saturday in Carbondale.

The band began its regular season Sept. 22 in Farmington after a preseason performance at the SEMO District Fair.

The band has several upcoming performances scheduled including one on Tuesday, Oct. 2, when the band will participate in the Jackson Band Festival.

Barnum a scholarship competition semifinalist

Joliette N. Barnum of Notre Dame High School has been selected as one of over 1,500 semifinalists in the 2002 Achievement Scholarship Competition.

More than 110,000 students from all parts of the U.S. entered the competition by requesting consideration when they took the 2002 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test as juniors. Semifinalists were designated on a regional representation basis and are the highest-scoring program entrants in the states that make up each geographic region.

To qualify as a semifinalists, the students must have a record of high academic performance throughout high school, be endorsed and recommended by their school principal and earn SAT scores that confirm earlier PSAT performance.

Meadow Heights students of the month

Rachel Bequette, Rebecca Brown, Erica Wilfong, Chelsey Bollinger, LeAnn Kuhlman, Derik Kinder, Terry Wagner, Kyle Pender, Peggy Anders, Maggie Keasling and Ruby Keele were selected as the students of the month for September at Meadow Heights Junior High.

Students of the month for Meadow Heights High School for September were Lynsie Creasman, Ben Tallent, Sarah Bequette and Cody Thompson.

Winners of the student of the month at the high school received a monogrammed sweatshirt.

Parents as Teachers group to hold meeting

The Kelly Parents as Teachers group will host its All About Me meeting at 6:30 p.m. today in the Scott County Elementary library.

Parents will have the opportunity to make body tracings for their children, hand-printing and make a book about them.

The meeting will focus on the child and teach parents about their child's temperament, how they relate to their world and how to use that insight for behavior management.
