The Southeast Missourian asked people what they thought about the career move that Dagwood Bumstead is making in the "Blondie" comic strip. Dagwood is leaving his desk job with Mr. Dithers to work with Blondie's catering business.
Bob Briner: "I think it's fine. It's a sign of the times in that many people are making a career move late in life. It might work. Blondie is a pretty strong personality. Maybe they are trying to add to their audience with this new direction."
Lisa Green: "I like the woman being in a position of power. I think that eventually it will not work out. They will have a lot of new topics to cover, a whole new spectrum. I think there won't be a Blondie comic after a while because they will probably kill each other."
Thomas Mason: "I think that you can work at something for such a long time that you get burned out. Seniority doesn't matter. There is a time for change for everything. I think that Dagwood made a good decision to change what he does for a living."
Barbara Neader: "I don't think that Dagwood will be as happy working for his wife. He'll probably want to be back with Mr. Dithers before very long, if Mr. Dithers will have him back. The catering business is entirely different from what he's done for 60 years."
Mike Dumey: "This is the '90s. It's time for some change. With 60 years at one job, it's time to move on. I think he'll make it. I think readers will support the change. Maybe this is Dagwood's chance to be `numero uno' by working for Blondie."
Karen Smiley: "I think that it's time he quit. I kind of pity his wife taking him on as an employee because of his record with Mr. Dithers. I hope they keep the Dithers in it. I like seeing Cora Dithers beat up on Mr. Dithers. Maybe Dagwood will eat up all of Blondie's profits."
