The Southeast Missourian asked people what they thought about Patrick Buchanan challenging President Bush for the Republican nomination for president in 1992.
Byron Dormeyer: "I think that Buchanan has some good ideas, but that he should have given those to Bush or to the Republican committee. I don't think he has a chance. Bush is a good man, but it's a big job. I think Bush will come up with what's needed."
Nancy Richards: "I think it's surprising that he has come up so close to Bush in the New Hampshire primary. A lot of people are tired of Bush and promises that were not kept. When you're in that level of politics, I think Buchanan wants the job, not just to send a message."
Richard H. Swaim: "I admire Pat Buchanan, but I hate to see anybody opposing the president. I would like to see Bush re-elected. I think Buchanan is sending a message to the president which I hope he hears. Bush should work at being president and not campaign against Buchanan."
Judy Brown: "I don't think that Bush need worry about Buchanan's challenge, but he should also give serious thought to anyone running against him. I think that Buchanan possibly thinks that he is speaking for the American people and is serious about running for president."
Scott Bradshaw: "I don't think it is a serious challenge to Bush. I think that good will come out of it for Bush and that it will make him more aggressive. Bush should take more time to face the problems rather than taking time to face the candidate who talks about those problems."
Mike Todt: "I think that by Buchanan running for the presidency, it will at least let the American public hear what it wants to hear on the conservative side. That may sway Bush to make some promises that we want to hear. Realistically, Buchanan is probably looking four years ahead."
