The Southeast Missourian asked people what they thought about the way the nomination of Lani Guinier for assistant attorney general was handled and eventually withdrawn.

Everlean Brown: "It sounds like Clinton is in doubt and there are some things that have not been brought out. Something is being hidden and it's not real clear right now. Clinton has a lot of heat on him now, and he's so uncertain about a lot of things including her nomination."

Rick Bradley: "I do not think the president's staff did their homework. Now they are embarrassed. Regardless of her writing and her wording anything, controversies should have been discovered before nominating her. Not having all of the facts always get us in trouble."

Sam Egson: "Some of her background was hidden before the nomination was made and that is really nobody's fault. She should have still been given a chance for the position and treated fair. Everybody in this country deserves that chance."

Sheila Wade: "It is a fundamental right in this country that you are innocent until proven guilty and she was not given that consideration. The Clinton administration was looking bad again and Guinier happened to be the one that suffered this time, and that's too bad."

Francis Ward: "I feel like she was a capable candidate for the nomination of assistant attorney general, and her nomination should not have been pulled because Clinton was afraid he was going to look bad. She should have been able to prove and defend herself."

Gary Brown: "President Clinton and his staff should have known all the facts before she was nominated. She was not given much of a chance, however, after she was nominated or before her nomination was revoked. She should have been given a chance to defend herself."
