The Southeast Missourian asked people Sunday, "Do you think the recent vote to ban assault-style weapons will deter crime?"

Adrienne Smith, Kennett

"Yes, I think it will, because it will get more guns off the street.

Therefore, it will get more crime off the streets. However, if they still

have the guns they bought previously, it won't help as much. If they

can't buy guns now, there won't be so many out there later on."

Jess Bolen, Cape

"In my personal opinion, if you check statistics, assault weapons are not the weapons that are usually used in murder cases and in robberies. But why would anyone want an assault weapon? Overall, I don't believe it will deter crime."

Richard Volkerding, Cape

"Criminals are still going to have assault weapons, and I'm not the person that's killing people. People who want to kill people are going to get something to kill them.

Mary Bolen, Cape

"No, I think the criminals will always have access to the weapons they want."

John Yallaly, Cape

"There is no way. There are so many guns out there right now, any crook will find a gun. It isn't the good people who use guns (to kill other people), it's bad people, and they'll find them (guns). They've got a way to find guns."

Mike Cohen, Cape

"I think if someone wants to get a gun when they want to kill someone, they will use any means possible to get that gun. I think it's a nice idea, but I don't think it's going to work."
