The 1991-92 Paw staff, in its seventh year of publication, has earned five national awards and seven state awards in competition this spring.

The staff received four Gold Key awards and one Sweepstakes award from Quill and Scroll, the International Honorary Society for High School Journalists.

Matt Jones won a Gold Key in the cartoon category for his cartoon, "Jimmy learned..." He also received a Smith Corona Spell-Write, a hand-held electronic dictionary, calculator and word game, for earning Sweepstakes honors.

Jones is an eighth-grader at CJHS this year. His entry was submitted from the April 19, 1991 issue of The Paw. The annual contest allows entries from February of one year to February of the next year.

Other national Gold Key winners in the Quill and Scroll contest were Adam Davis for his sports column, "Is the Magic Gone," Kelly Morgan for her column, "Time for Nyquil," and Amanda Diamond for her feature, "All kids can be reaches."

There were 250 entries this year in the contest's eight divisions. The Paw's Gold Key winners were among 33 winners from 13 states.

The the Missouri Interscholastic Press Association's (MIPA) Awards Day ceremonies on the campus of the University of Missouri at Columbia on April 22, The Paw staff earned an MIPA All-Missouri award, two first place awards, two third place awards and two honorable mentions.

Of the 18 papers that received All-Missouri awards this year, The Paw was the only junior high paper to receive this special rating. This was The Paw's second year in a row to be the only junior high paper rated All-Missouri.

From the 781 entries in the individual competition, The Paw staff members earned six awards.

Adam Davis received first place in the sports column for his column, "Sideline Sports." Amber Keller also received first place in the feature story category for her story "Marriages pass golden mark." Keller also received third place in the photo category for her photograph "Paper Airplanes."

Jamie Pekois earned third place in the editorial category for her editorial "On snow days, thefts, snack cakes and odors." She also receive honorable mention in the feature story category for her story, "Memories of Christmas 1891." Laura Sides received honorable mention in the review category for her story "Freddy fans bid farewell."

Excellent writing and photography coverage were two of the strengths cited by The Paw's overall judge, Rose Kuryniec. "Super staff," she commented.
