KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- A settlement has been reached between the parents of a teenager killed during a police chase and the Independence Police Department.

The settlement means John and Cheryl Cooper will split $275,000, minus $107,200.64 in legal fees. The parties in the case agreed to the settlement in February. The trial in the case was scheduled to begin today.

Christopher Cooper, 17, died in 2007 after being struck by a car being pursued by Independence police. Cooper was crossing a street on a bicycle when he was struck.

The Kansas City Star reports that as part of the agreement, the Coopers agreed to dismiss claims against the police as well as Medevac MidAmerica Inc., an emergency response provider. Neither party admitted fault.
