Sometimes parents wonder if the decisions they are making for their children are right. Often single parents have no one to confer with or lean on when difficulties rearing a child arise.
To combat these lonely feelings, several members of the local Parents Without Partners group plan to present the tape "You're a Better Parent Than You Think!" to the public from 2 to 4 p.m. Oct. 3 at First General Baptist Church, 1812 Cape LaCroix Road, Cape Girardeau. Admission is free.
The cassette program is given by Dr. Ray Guarendi, a father of 10 children who delivers his message on psychological principles in a humorous manner. He has been a guest on national radio and television shows including "Oprah," "The 700 Club," "CBS This Morning," "Joan Rivers," "Scott Rivers Prime Time" and "Gordon Elliot." He most recently spoke at the Parents Without Partners International Convention in Fort Mitchell, Ky.
If attendance for this first program is good, there are plans for a 12-week tape program on topics including "Normal doesn't mean right," "TV or not TV," "Balancing the Discipline Scale," "Friendly Persuasion" and "Kid Logic."
Parents Without Partners, an international organization founded in 1957, aims to provide single parents and their families with opportunities for enhancing personal growth, self confidence and sensitivity toward others by offering an environment for support, friendship and the exchange of parenting techniques.
The Cape SEMO Parents Without Partners chapter began in 1971. The group ranges in age from 20 year olds to members in their 70s. The group of more than 80 members focuses on children and education. About nine activities are offered monthly; some of which are adult activities. Orientations are held twice monthly at Riverside Regional Library in Jackson. The local phone number is 335-0797 or 243-2287.
