CAPE GIRARDEAU -- Parents of junior high students in Cape Girardeau will be locked in Friday during an event designed to provide new parenting skills. CAPE GIRARDEAU -- Parents of junior high students in Cape Girardeau will be locked in Friday during an event designed to provide new parenting skills.

The lock-in is sponsored by the Drug Prevention team at the junior high.

Jim Hicks, a member of the team, said the lock-in is designed to provide information to parents and also "to help parents be supportive of other parents. We also want to be more effective in encouraging our children to be alcohol and substance free."

He said three major presentations are planned during the evening.

Sharee Galnore and Donna Boardman with the Missouri Division of Highway Safety will talk with parents about communication skills.

Sally Hemmes, with the Franciscan Center, will talk about parenting skills.

And Hicks said a young person will describe his battle with substance abuse and addiction.

The lock-in begins with registration at 6:30 p.m. and the program will run from 7-10 p.m.
