Ozark man dies in Hawaii honeymoon car wreck

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) -- A Springfield-area man died while honeymooning in Hawaii when his car plunged 140 feet from a cliff-top highway into the ocean, his widow said.

Kevin Patrick Curran, 42, and Jill Curran, 43, were honeymooning on the island of Maui after getting married May 5 in Eureka Springs, Ark.

"He's the best person in the whole world. He was my best friend," said Jill Curran by phone from the Lahaina Shores Beach Resort in Maui. "I'm here by myself."

Kevin Curran, from Ozark, died Saturday. He was driving alone in a 2006 Ford Mustang southbound on Honapiilani Highway in west Maui when his car left the road at a turn in the roadway and landed in the ocean 140 feet below, Maui police said.

Curran was thrown from the car and landed on the shoreline, according to police. A witness called police after seeing the car underwater.

Jill Curran said she and Kevin had fallen in love during a trip to Hawaii in 2003 and decided to honeymoon there.

The couple arrived May 13 in Maui. On Saturday afternoon, Jill went to buy lunch while her husband was exploring the island by car. Soon after she returned, police arrived and told her that her husband had died in a car accident.

"I'm in shock," she said. "I don't understand what happened."

Kevin Curran worked as a lawyer for 17 years, helping abused children. He stopped practicing law in 2004 to start the company balance360.com, selling a training device he invented for surfers and people undergoing physical therapy.
