Scott City police arrested two people on their way to St. Louis Wednesday in connection with possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute.

They were driving a rental car, coming from Texas, when Scott City police officer Jeremy Perrian stopped them for speeding near the 89-mile marker of Interstate 55, said police chief Don Cobb.

Perrian noticed several things that tipped him off, and conducted a search of the car, said Cobb.

The search revealed a rather large quantity of what is believed to be marijuana, about 4.3 pounds, he said.

"What makes this uncommon is this time of year," said Cobb.

Usually the larger quantities of marijuana are seized around September of October, closer to harvest time, not February, he said.
