On the first day applications were accepted for this year's Toybox program, 84 families asked for help to make Christmas special for their children.
Toybox, a joint project of the Cape Girardeau Jaycees and the Southeast Missourian newspaper, brings together the needs of these children with the generous gifts from community members.
Applications are being accepted through Dec. 6 at the Salvation Army, 701 Good Hope.
The applications include hand-written notes about the hardships and turmoil that have swept up some innocent victims children.
Mothers ask Toybox for coats and shoes, explaining they are struggling literally to keep a roof over the family's head.
Children have a desire for something special from Santa Claus. Mermaids and monster trucks made the youngsters' lists.
Toybox gifts will be delivered by a team of Jaycee Santas on Dec. 19. Toybox serves children in Cape Girardeau up to age 12.
Donations of new, unwrapped toys are requested. Also donations of new coats, mittens, hats and warm clothes are needed.
Gifts may be dropped off at the Southeast Missourian, 301 Broadway, West Park Mall, Capital Bank, AmeriFirst Bank, Farm and Home Savings Association, Gulliver's Travel Agency and Perry Travel Center.
Cash gifts may be sent to Toybox, P.O. Box 699, Cape Girardeau, Mo. 63701.
