Osage Centre set up as Red Cross cooling shelter due to extreme heat

In response to triple-digit highs in the forecast, the American Red Cross Southeast Missouri Chapter has opened a cooling center to help individuals cope with the extreme temperatures, according to a Red Cross news release.

The cooling center will be located in Cape Girardeau at the Osage Centre at 1625 N. Kingshighway.

The center will be open from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday. On Friday, the center will be open from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, the center will be open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The center will be open from 12 p.m. until 9 p.m. on Sunday. The cooling center will close at 5 p.m. Wednesday.

The cooling center will provide an air-conditioned place where people can cool down during extreme heat. Spending just a few hours in an air-conditioned environment can bring down the body's core temperature and make it easier to handle the heat.

At midday Thursday the National Weather Service was predicting a high of 105 degrees Thursday, 107 degrees on Friday and a high of 104 degrees on Saturday.
