Orchestra giving taste of upcoming season

Fans of the Southeast Missouri Symphony Orchestra will get a sneak peek Sunday of what the group will offer in its 2005-2006 concert series.

The orchestra's second annual symphony preview will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at Rose Theatre on the campus of Southeast Missouri State University. A small ensemble of Southeast alumni and faculty will play selections from the orchestra's upcoming concerts.

Symphony conductor Dr. Sara Edgerton said the group hopes to give possible patrons a taste of the season.

"It's only about a half-hour, it's free and there's no strings attached," Edgerton said. "They can come and listen and ask questions and take a symphony brochure if they want. We just want to demystify the symphony orchestra."

Rose Theatre was chosen as the venue for the concert so listeners can easily pick up tickets for the entire season or for individual concerts because the fine arts box office is in the theater lobby.

Concerts planned for the 2005-2006 season include a performance with Judith Farris; Poulenc's Organ Concerto, performed by Dr. Gary Miller; a holiday concert in November; Beethoven's Symphony No. 1 in March; and Mozart's Requiem in May.

Selections to be performed Sunday include Peter Warlock's Pavane, a selection from Capitol Suite for Strings that will be performed by the Southeast Chamber Orchestra Oct. 25; selections from Mozart's Flute Quartet in C Major, a preview of the Requiem performance, though the Requiem won't be played at that performance; and two Broadway tunes from Rodgers and Hammerstein that will be performed in the Judith Farris concert.
