ULLIN, Ill. -- The holiday giving project "Operation C.A.R.E. Bears" (Children Are Remembered Everywhere) will help 52 families with 150 children this year.

What began in 1994 as an Illinois State Police District 22 fund-raiser for trooper Steve Pankey's family after the loss of their father and husband has grown to include partnerships with other community organizations driven to provide assistance to families and children at Christmas. The project now provides Christmas gifts, food and clothing.

After 1994, District 22 continued in the traditional Christmas spirit, holding "Shop With a Cop," which included lunch at McDonalds for the children. Soon after a Ronald McDonald House Children's Charity grant was obtained and because of the outpouring of caring iniatives, the name Operation CARE Bears was selected.

The grant now helps a greater number of families. Contributions have been received from Girl Scout Troops 68 in Anna, Ill., and 98 in Herrin, Ill.; local church groups, grocery stores, businesses, sorrorities, individuals and schools. Fund-raisers include themed luncheons, candy and soda sales held at District 22, concessions and motorcycle runs at the Golconda Shrimp Festival, benefit comedy basketball games with the Harlem All Stars and the raffles that coordinate.

Last year 125 children and 40 families benefitted from the $14,225 raised. Anyone wishing to donate so more families can be helped may contact Trooper Dale R. Poole no. 4454, District 22, Ullin, Ill., (618) 845-3740, extension 271.
