James was partially ejected from the pickup. He was pronounced dead at the scene, Hovis said. His unidentified 22-year-old girlfriend suffered serious injuries and was hospitalized. Two children, ages 1 and 3, were hospitalized.

Hovis, one of the first emergency personnel on the scene, said the pickup was upside down when he arrived and the children were in their safety seats.
