ARBYRD, Mo. -- A 13-year-old boy was killed in an ATV accident Thursday morning near Arbyrd.
According to trooper J.B. Doyle of the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the crash happened just after 8:30 a.m. on Dunklin County Road 637, 2 miles south of Missouri 164.
The accident occurred as a 1999 Polaris Sportsman all-terrain vehicle driven by 18-year-old Dallas Shands of Cardwell, Mo., swerved to avoid a collision with a farm tractor.
Shands and his passenger, 13-year-old Jake Jones of Arbyrd, were both thrown from the ATV.
Both teens were taken to Twin Rivers Regional Medical Center in Kennett, Mo., where Jones was pronounced dead at 9:52 a.m. by Dr. James W. Fletcher.
According to members of Shands' family, he remains hospitalized with moderate injuries.
Trooper R.L. Vannada and the Dunklin County Sheriff's Department assisted in the crash investigation.
