A Cape Girardeau resident was transported to a hospital after their fireplace caught fire Sunday.
Dwayne Kirchhoff, chief of the East County Volunteer Fire Department, said the fire at 4688 County Road 621 was called in about 12:30 p.m., when one of the homeowners was trying to start a fire in the fireplace. Kirchhoff said a liquid accelerant was used and caught the house on fire.
Kirchhoff said the fire was mainly confined to the living room and kitchen area with smoke damage to the rest of the roughly 1,600-square-foot home. He estimated $20,000 to $30,000 in damage was done.
Six trucks responded with mutual aid coming from the Cape Girardeau Fire Department and the Fruitland Fire Protection District, he said. The Cape Girardeau Sheriff's Department and Cape County Ambulance responded, he said.
