The Southeast Missourian asked, "What do you think law enforcement policy should be regarding high speed chases of speeding motorists?"
Louis Haynes, Cape Girardeau
"I don't think that they should chase suspects only because when a person is trying to get away from the law, they have no regard for what's in front of them. Their motive is to get away. And then with other people, pedestrians and traffic, they don't know what's going on, so the only person who really has the situation in hand is the police officer. That's what they have two-way radios for. I'd prefer to see a person get away at that particular time."
Greg Lincoln, Cape Girardeau
"If they're being pursued by an officer in a high-speed chase, they obviously have something to hide. They should continue the chase unless they're going through a residential neighborhood, where it might endanger lives and property."
Wendy Nenninger, Cape Girardeau
"I don't think they need to be chasing them moving down the highway, because they're going to put others in danger. If there is something more than speeding, then I think it would depend on why they are pursuing them."
Mike Brown, Ft. Wayne, Ind.
"I think they should use their own good professional judgment."
Dale Humphries, Cape Girardeau
"I think they should only pursue if it's not putting citizens at risk. You hear of too many cases where either the police officer is injured or some innocent bystander, and that worries me. I'd like to see them use other means by contacting other police officers and heading them off some other way."
