The Oliver House in Jackson will be open November 1 for tours. Featured this month are souvenirs from travels to the Orient in 1932 and 1937 by the Haas Family.
Mr. and Mrs. Edmund L. Haas of St. Louis, their daughter Marian and son Ed had the opportunity to travel by steamship around the world. Their travels in the Orient were fascinating and somewhat dangerous as Japan and China were at war. According to Mrs. Haas' travel diary on display, bombing and shelling could be heard nearby when the family visited Shanghai.
On display are travel stickers in mint condition, lacquerware of bamboo and gold paint, a cork picture, passports, travel diaries, photographs, a kimono and obi, three Japanese "jackets," and travel agendas for the family.
Marian Haas, now deceased, became Mrs. Joseph Quatmann of Cape Girardeau. Her son, Ted, and daughter, Catherine Stoverink, live in Jackson. Stoverink is the caretaker of the collection.
