KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) -- A human resources official for the Kansas City schools says the district has about 1,000 too many employees.

Steve Harris is the new assistant superintendent of human resources. He says the district's 3,300 employees are too many for an enrollment of about 17,000.

He would not predict how many job cuts might be made, saying a lot would depend on the strategic planning process and school closings.

Harris is part of a new human resources department for the district. The department was revamped after a new superintendent dropped a consulting contract that managed human resources.

The district dropped more than 500 employees over the summer -- about 200 through layoffs.
