CAPE GIRARDEAU -- H. Stephen Glenn, noted family psychologist and educator, will conduct a training seminar here April 2-4.
The workshop teaches Glenn's strategy for "Developing Capable People." It is designed for those who will later teach the workshop.
Cost for the training is $400, which includes books, an audio tape set and lunch each day.
The public is invited to a free session with Glenn April 3 at Central High Auditorium, beginning at 7 p.m.
Glenn, author of "Raising Self-Reliant Children in a Self-Indulgent World," is a consultant on training, education, alcoholism and drug abuse.
He has served as director of the national drug abuse center for training and resource development and has served as an adviser to four presidents on drug abuse prevention.
Janet Shepard, who has been through Glenn's "Developing Capable People" program, is helping to coordinate his visit here.
"`Developing Capable People' is a course designed for parents and teachers," she said. "It's all about helping young people become responsible for their own actions, empowering them so that they are comfortable in taking care of their lives."
Shepard said Glenn is a sought-after speaker. "I feel very fortunate that we've been able to bring him to Cape. He's booked, I've heard, one to three years in advance."
"Stephen Glenn is a gifted speaker and educator who brings an important message to parents, teachers and other professional seeking to raise and educate our youth," Shepard said.
"He is very practical, and he's very easy to understand and follow. Each time I hear him talk I get something from it that is beneficial to me or my family.
"I think he offers a direction for parents to travel without making them feel guilty about what done so far," she said.
Scholarships for the three-day workshop are available for residents of Cape Girardeau or for professionals working with young people or families in the community.
Enrollment is limited to 35 people, and registration is required no later than March 22. For information, call Janet Shepard at 334-7501.
The local workshop is being sponsored by the Cape Girardeau Drug Free Schools and Communities Advisory Board.
The evening program open to the public is sponsored by the SEMO Social Work Club, the Mental Health Association of Cape Girardeau, Missouri State Division of Alcohol and Drugs, St. Francis Medical Center and the Drug Free Schools Advisory Board.
