Nominations are now being accepted for the Southeast Missourian's annual Spirit of America Award to be presented on the Fourth of July.

"The award goes annually to a person who personifies the character and service to community that helped shape America," said Jon K. Rust, publisher of the Southeast Missourian. "Since the award's inception, each recipient has been a remarkable individual, a local hero. The newspaper is proud to sponsor this prestigious award."

Last year's winner was James Harnes Sr., who was recognized for his service in the U.S. Army and National Guard and his commitments to bringing about improvements in Advance, Mo., where he helped establish a medical clinic. Other past winners were Neal Edwards, John "Doc" Yallaly, Dr. Dan Cotner and Melvin Gateley.

Organizations such as civic clubs, rotary clubs, church groups, veterans organizations, sports leagues and school groups can nominate someone for the award. The award will be presented by the Southeast Missourian at the annual Libertyfest at 5:15 p.m. July 4.

"It's a real patriotic event," said Marla Mills, executive director of Old Town Cape.
