Millersville firefighters were joined by those from Gordonville to quell a two-alarm blaze Wednesday afternoon at a home on Lakeview Drive in Millersville.
Millersville fire chief Jerry Aufdenberg said no one was injured. The two fire departments responded to a call at 2:55 p.m., and Jackson's fire department was put on standby. He said the fire appears to have started from some gas-soaked rags the homeowner has been using to clean his car motor.
"When we got there, we had heavy fire and smoke in the garage," Aufdenberg said.
"He left and his wife said she heard a puff of air, like a 'poof.'" She opened the garage door and saw the fire, shut the door and went out from the front of the house, using her cell phone to call us," he said, adding that by shutting the door, she kept the fire from moving into the main part of the 2,500-square-foot home, though it did reach into the attic.
Marble Hill fire chief Jim Bollinger "just happened to be passing by, so he stopped and helped," Aufdenberg said.
The garage, which housed two cars at the time, was totaled, he said.
