A fire broke out at 9:36 p.m. Monday in the 300 block of South Park Avenue.

Firefighters from Cape Girardeau, Jackson and Scott City responded to the call, and within 10 minutes of arriving the fire was extinguished, said Capt. Jeff Crites of the Cape Girardeau Fire Department.

The fire started in a small two-door garage on the north side of the home, one vehicle was inside, and the structure was considered a total loss, he said. The fire spread to the side of the home, but firefighters were able to extinguish the flame before it got inside. The siding on both the first and second floors were damaged.

An elderly woman inside the home was safely removed by neighbors before fire personnel arrived, said Cape Girardeau Fire Department battalion chief Fred Vincel.
