Cape Girardeau firefighters battled a structure fire early Sunday morning at 2312 Lombardo St., according to battalion chief Steve Niswonger. The fire occurred around 7 a.m. and was contained to the utility room of the house. The rest of the house suffered extensive smoke damage, an estimated $20,000 loss, Niswonger said. An investigation found that clothes in and around the water heater in the building likely led to the fire. The residents of the house were not at home at the time the fire broke out, and no one was injured in the blaze.
