A fire caused by cooking damaged a Cape Girardeau apartment late Wednesday afternoon, but all were able to make it out of the building safely.
Firefighters responded to a call of a fire at 121 East Rodney Drive around 5:23 p.m. Wednesday and upon arrival saw smoke coming from the second floor of an apartment building and flames in one apartment's second floor window, according to a news release from the Cape Girardeau Fire Department.
Everyone had exited the apartment where the fire began by the time crews arrived, but firefighters had to help people in the other apartments on the second floor from the building. The flames were quickly put out by firefighters, according to the release, and after an investigation the fire was ruled accidental. The apartment was moderately damaged.
