IRONTON -- The search for a deer hunter missing since Sunday has been temporarily called off, leaving only a few townsfolk looking for the man, authorities said Friday.

Searchers had been using dogs and helicopters to search for David Skaggs, 55, of Park Hills, but stopped on Wednesday.

"We don't feel it's necessary to search that area any longer at this time," said Iron County Sheriff Kenneth Ruble.

Officials said that Skaggs has not been presumed dead and they didn't know when the search would continue.

Ruble said that a couple of people from Ironton continue searching on their own.

Skaggs was hunting in the hills around Buford Mountain State Forest with his son-in-law, Jim Babout.
