A Friday house fire in Cape Girardeau County caused extensive damage, with the total loss valued at $1 million, state fire marshal Greg Carrell said Wednesday.
The Cape Girardeau Fire Department responded to a call Friday morning about a house fire off County Road 206.
The fire began in the garage at 11:11 a.m., fire chief Rick Ennis said. No injuries were reported. The fire proved difficult to extinguish, with firefighters rotating in and out of duty for breaks. Last to leave the scene was the Gordonville Fire Department at 4:30 p.m.
The homeowners' teenage son was home alone at the time and evacuated the house safely after a smoke detector sounded. The Edwards family plans to rebuild at the same location, where they had resided for the previous 27 years, Diane Edwards said Friday.
As of Wednesday the fire is still under investigation with the cause undetermined, Carrell said.
