Missouri Attorney General Jay Nixon spoke at a Democratic Party fund-raising event Saturday in Cape Girardeau. Nearly 200 people attended the event at the University Center. Local Democratic leader Tom Neumeyer said the event drew a larger crowd than usual. He said lower approval ratings of Republican state and federal politicians and Nixon's announced candidacy for governor helped draw more Democratic supporters to the gathering. "We are witnessing a tremendous groundswell of support for our cause," Neumeyer said. Nixon's speech was one of his first since he declared his candidacy for governor, Neumeyer said. Rep. Rachel Storch, D-St. Louis, also spoke at the event.
